Hailey Bieber is finally sharing the secret to her perfectly messy waves — and it’s a lot less complicated than you might think. In a new video shared to her YouTube channel, the model took viewers through her entire hair routine for a night out. “This is usually just my go-to when I have the time to do it myself,” she says at the start of the four-and-a-half-minute clip. “If I was like going out for a dinner or going out on date night, this is typically the hair that I’m going to do.”

The key to Hailey Bieber’s beach waves? A flatiron. Using her straightener to create waves gives the right amount of texture and definition without looking too polished. “To me, it’s fine if it’s not these perfect, glossy waves,” she says. First, Bieber uses a volumizing spray — specifically, OUAI Volume Spray — in her damp hair before blow-drying. “It’s the best, it smells amazing,” she says, while also shouting out celebrity hairstylist and founder of the hair care brand, Jen Atkin.

After her hair is dry, Bieber applies IGK Beach Club Volume Texture Spray to create even more volume and texture. She notes that when her hair is freshly washed it tends to be a bit slippery, so adding the spray helps to give her hair more grip and help it curl easier.

Next, Bieber grabs her Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener and puts the top half of her hair in a clip to begin putting waves in the bottom section. “I don’t know how to explain what this motion is,” she says as she rolls the iron back and forth down a strand of hair. “It’s kind of just a wave motion.” (The technique is commonly referred to as S-waves.) After finishing her entire head, Bieber says she then looks for spots that need a bit more wave or any areas she needs to fix.

“I add dry shampoo at the end because I hope that when I do my hair and then sleep on it, it’ll still be fresh enough to wear again the next day,” she says. Bieber’s dry shampoo of choice? Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo. Finally, she locks everything in with a light hair spray, Phytolaque Soie Light Hold Hair Spray.

The end result is a glam-yet-subtle look that can easily work for day or night. Think model-off-duty hair — literally. Want to watch the full tutorial? Check it out here:
