6. Prioritize Preventive Care

Starting our list of anti-aging habits is prioritizing preventive care. When we’re younger, we may despise going to the doctor, but as we get older, those yearly checkups are especially important. This includes screenings for cancer or other diseases, which often have a higher percentage rate the older you get. The best way to stay on top of your health is to routinely get checkups with your primary care doctor.

Fifth on our list of anti-aging habits is having lots of cognitive and social interactions. One of the biggest health concerns when aging is cognitive decline and dementia. While genetics does play a part, our habits also influence our mental health. Instead of indulging in destructive behaviors, focusing on staying mentally and socially engaged can make a difference for brain health. This can include crossword puzzles, learning new skills, or engaging in complex conversations.

Next on our list of anti-aging habits is drinking lots of water. While not everyone can drink a gallon of water a day, it’s important to stay as hydrated as possible. Not only does it help with hydration, but increases energy levels, keeps our digestive system functioning normally, and hydrates the skin. Who doesn’t want fewer wrinkles to deal with?

3. Getting 7-9 Hours of Sleep

Rounding out the top three anti-aging habits is getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Life may get busier every year, but it’s important to get the right amount of sleep. It’s the best protection against some of the most common diseases associated with age. A good night’s sleep can decrease the chances of heart disease, stroke, obesity, and inflammation, and improve our brain’s concentration.

Second on our list of anti-aging habits is optimizing your nutrition. Eating poorly doesn’t just cause obesity, cancer, and other health issues. Eating too many processed sugars can also speed up the aging process in your skin, causing dark circles and wrinkles. Instead, nutrients should be crucial parts of your diet. This includes protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
