Daniel Radcliffe may be known for his Harry Potter stint as a child, but now he’s moving into the world of wellness and fatherhood.
The award-winning actor was recently interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, sharing his experiences with going to the gym, embracing sobriety, and navigating fatherhood.
A Healthier Active Lifestyle
During his interview with the Wall Street Journal, the British actor shared pieces of his morning routine, life as a parent, and his wellness routine, which includes lots of exercise.
Many may remember when Daniel Radcliffe got super ripped in 2023, and rumors flew about him being the next Wolverine. However, the toned physique was for his role as Weird Al Yankovic.
His continued passion for training comes from a different place now, one that battles his past struggles with alcohol.
“I do weights, circuit training [and] cardio,” he shared. “I don’t look like a person who would be a fitness freak, but I’m pretty intense about it.”
Since he has an addictive personality, Radcliffe pushes that towards health and fitness, rather than devolving to harmful habits.
“I feel like I’m a cliché of a former alcoholic or anyone who had any kind of addictive personality and then switched that addiction to being about the gym,” he added.
That isn’t the only thing Radcliffe stepped away from, either, to improve his health. He also gave up smoking.
“I used to run on coffee and cigarettes all day,” he said. “Then, I gave up smoking. Now I just run on coffee all day.”
His parents are also pretty into fitness and staying healthy, so it seems the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
Life with a Child
While he did share a lot about his routine, Radcliffe also gave a glimpse into his life as a father. He shares a 2-year-old son with girlfriend Erin Darke.
“I have a small child, so my body has trained to wake up at about 5:30. My son has a night-light where you can program it to turn a different color at a certain time, so at 6:30 it will flick from blue to yellow and I will hear him scream, ‘It’s yellow, COME GET ME!'”
Impact of Child Acting
While Daniel Radcliffe’s current life looks pretty sweet after being an internationally known child actor, he does point out that not all child stars get the same experience.
“People often talk about me, Rupert [Grint] and Emma [Watson] and the Harry Potter kids in general as being a good example of, ‘See, it can all be fine,'” he shared. “and yes it can be, but we all worked really hard on ourselves to make it fine.”
He goes on to say that the Harry Potter set was something special, as they grew up on set and were surrounded by mostly the same group of people for ten years, who all cared about the actors.
Daniel Radcliffe added, “I was also really lucky with my parents.”
Many child actors may not get the same treatment and fall into addiction or other troubles with the law as they grow older.
