Demi Lovato just debuted some bold new body art.
Lovato, who uses the pronouns they/them, revealed the new ink in an Instagram Story on Saturday, January 8. The video shows a large section of the side of their head shaved with a freshly-inked black spider tattoo above the ear. Lovato tagged Los Angeles-based tattoo artist, Dr. Woo, who has done a couple of tattoos for the popstar.
Lovato later gave some insight into the meaning behind the tattoo. “It was Grandmother Spider who taught us many things. She taught us about pottery and weaving. She taught us about fire and light and dark. She taught us that we are all connected on the web — each one of us having our own place in this world,” they wrote in an Instagram story that followed.

Lovato’s new ink comes shortly after news that they reportedly completed a rehab stint in late 2021. A source told US Weekly that “it was their decision to go back to rehab.” In early December, the popstar went back on their prior stance of going “California sober,” aka using marijuana in place of alcohol and other addictive substances, writing on Instagram that “sober sober is the only way to be.”
Spider tattoos are widely popular among people who are in recovery, as they are thought to represent harmony, connection, and strength. There is a great deal of symbolism attached to the image of a spider. Specifically, the black widow, which appears to be what Lovato has inked on their head, generally symbolizes a strong woman.

Still, little else is known about the current state of Lovato’s sobriety or what’s next for the singer. They started off 2022 with a clean slate on social media, wiping their entire Instagram feed of all prior posts. The only post you will find on their page is an artsy collage of a selfie uploaded on January 1. The photo is simply captioned with the “ ” emoji.
