Summer is finally here—and just in time. There’s no denying that life has been heavy as of late, and while we’re all still adjusting to a new normal and dealing with all kinds of challenges, it’s time for a little fun in the sun. One of the easiest ways to mix things up and put a little more pep in your step? Experimenting with makeup. “People are ready to get a little glamour back in their lives,” says makeup artist Jenny Patinkin. Amen to that. So pour yourself a glass of rosé and bust out your makeup bag, it’s time to brighten back up your look. Ahead, the summer 2020 makeup trends to try now.

Bright Eyes

Since we’re all wearing masks with so much of our faces hidden, eyes are going to be the main place people can play with and express themselves through makeup, says Patinkin. Ditch your standard neutral shadows for bright, happy colors like a sunny yellow, aqua blue or neon green, she suggests. To make sure the rainbow hue is the focus, keep the rest of your eye makeup minimal, going without liner and using just a touch of mascara. If you’re wary of applying a bold color allover your lid, you can also apply it just at the lashline using a thin shadow smudging brush, she says. Pick up the Revlon Colorstay Looks Book Eye Shadow Palette in Player ($8; target.com), which features an array of vibrant shades.

Colorful Mascara

Another way to dip your toe into the colorful eye makeup trend for summer 2020? Trade basic black mascara for a colorful option, suggests makeup artist Mary Irwin. Try navy blue if you want to keep it more subtle; she likes the Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Long Lush Treatment Mascara in Indigo ($47; kohgendocosmetics.com) and adds that the tubing formula is an especially great pick for summer because it’s long-lasting. Or, go for something really out-of-the box like bright green or hot pink. The Sephora Collection Volume On Mascara ($10; sephora.com) is an affordable pick and comes in four standout shades, including the prettiest turquoise.

Clear Lip Gloss

While masks may be a daily staple, we’re not going to be wearing them 24/7. “A clear lip gloss is perfect for when masks come off because it’s super low maintenance and can be applied anytime, anywhere, no mirror needed,” points out Patinkin. Plus, the high-shine finish makes lips appear fuller, in an expensive-looking way, and enhancies their natural color. Another benefit: The latest formulas feature oil and jelly-based textures that are smooth and hydrating, rather than thick and sticky, she adds. Two to try: CoverGirl Exhibitionist Lip Gloss in Ghosted ($7; target.com) or Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss in Jellyfish ($27; kosas.com).

Bronzer on Your Body

You don’t need a bottle of self-tanner to create a sun-kissed glow. Patinkin says it’s all about playing with bronzer on your body this summer: “Apply it on the collarbones, and down the sides of the arms and front of the legs to create a little bit of definition and the illusion of more length,” she suggests. You can do this with any type of formula, and there’s no shortage of new options for you to choose from. The beloved Nars Bronzing Powder ($38; narscosmetics.com) now comes in matte shades, while the new Tower28 Bronzino Illuminating Bronzer ($20; credobeauty.com) is great for those who prefer more shine. But if you're looking to quickly highlight just one area, like your collarbones, you can't go wrong with the Becca Glow Body Stick ($48; dermstore.com).

Ultra-Fluffy Eyebrows

To the same point about eyes taking center stage, “focusing on your brows is more important than ever, now that half your face is covered much of the time,” says Irwin. Forget the uber-tailored ‘Instagram brow’ that was a thing a few months back and all those upkeep wax appointments. According to Patinkin, “It’s all about a bushy brow that’s brushed up to make the top line look even fluffier.” Start by using a fine-tipped pencil to fill in any gaps or sparse areas, then finish with a clear gel or pomade to set the shape, using upwards brushstrokes, she suggests. We like: Maybelline New York Brow Ultra Slim Defining Eyebrow Pencil ($8; ulta.com) and Beautycounter Brilliant Brow Gel ($24; beautycounter.com).
