Amy Schumer is looking and, more importantly, feeling good after revealing on social media that she had liposuction surgery. The comedian, who shared her story on January 18, didn’t seek surgery for superficial reasons, but rather to rebuild her strength after dealing with years of pain from endometriosis.
“I feel good. Finally. It’s been a journey,” Schumer wrote in a recent Instagram post alongside a swimsuit photo. She went onto to share the surgeries she had done, including endometriosis surgery and liposuction, to help regain strength after giving birth to her son, Gene, two years ago.
“Never thought I would do anything [like this], but talk to me after your uterus doesn’t contract for 2.5 years and you turn 40,” she added, alluding to some of the pregnancy complications she has spoken about in the past. In her HBO series, Expecting Amy, she shared that pregnancy took quite the toll on her body and she that delivered her son via a complicated elective C-section.
Women with endometriosis are at higher risk of pregnancy and birth complications. And while pregnancy has been shown to help reduce endometriosis symptoms in some cases, it has also been found that endometriosis-related pain can worsen due to an expanded uterus. After birth, it’s important for the uterus to be emptied, and if the uterus does not contract on its own, this can lead to further complications.
According to reporting by People, Schumer had her uterus successfully in September 2021. “All my lifelong pain explained and lifted out of my body,” she said at the time. “I am already a changed person. I am busting with joy for the new energy I have to be with my son.”
In the caption, the actress also thanked the doctors responsible for her transformation: plastic surgeon Jordan Terner, MD, for the liposuction, as well as Tamer Seckin, MD, and Karli Goldstein, MD, who specialize in deep excision laparoscopic surgery at the Seckin Endometriosis Center. “Thanks for helping me get my strength back,” she wrote. In addition to surgery, Schumer also credited message therapy and acupuncture for her healing.
In a related Instagram Story, Schumer shared that she’s now that she’s now 170 lbs. post-procedures.
The response Schumer received after revealing her the results of her health journey has been overwhelmingly positive. Fellow celebrities congratulated the actress for her transformation. “Healthy, sexy, happy, love it ❤️,” wrote Mindy Kaling. “You look so happy mama,” added Heather Brooker.
Fans also took to the comment section to thank Schumer for owning the work she has had done, something not all celebrities are willing to do. Others acknowledged her struggle and shared similar stories of their own.
“Same exact journey as you. Severe endo, @seckinmd surgery, acupuncture and and tox also incredibly helpful to me. And my son is exactly your sons age. Thank you for being so open about your journey. Definitely makes people like me feel more comfortable doing so,” wrote one follower.
