Chunky highlights are cool again—and Bella Hadid is proof. On Tuesday, just ahead of her 24th birthday, the supermodel was photographed leaving a New York City salon sporting one of the biggest hair trends of 2020.
Hadid later showed off her brand new hairstyle on Instagram. In the photos, you can see that chunky, caramel highlights have been added to her signature chocolate brown shade. The slightly thicker sections of warm, caramel color blend beautifully with her cool base hue to create a fresh look for fall. A dramatic face frame adds an edgy touch.
And although Hadid’s highlights are more blended and less drastic than the iconic chunky highlights from the ‘00s, her new look still leaves us nostalgic for Kelly Clarkson’s “Thankful” days.
Hadid isn’t the only celebrity revisiting past trends this year. Kim Kardashian sported chunky, sandy blonde highlights for her KKW Beauty “90s Chic” collection.
To modernize the look, celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons told Allure that he used less competitive tones and an ombré effect. “The base tone is a beautiful neutral brown with cool beige highlights,” he said.
Dua Lipa also rocked super chunky highlights back in March, with a stark shade difference of platinum blonde and dark brown, followed by somewhat subtler takes from Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Jenner. A number of influencers have been championing the trend, too.
