She has previously tried different shades of brown and blonde and even red. The most recent example? On Monday, the supermodel debuted a new look: long black hair with face-framing, brassy orange bangs.
Known as “money piece” highlights, the style is characterized by chunky streaks of contrasting color that frame the face. A throwback to the early 2000s pop rock era — think Avril Levigne, Hayley Williams, and Christina Aguilera — the dramatic look made a comeback in fall 2020, and Hadid is proving that the Y2k beauty trend is here to stay.
She showed off her new hairstyle at a dinner in New York City earlier this week, which she documented on Instagram, wearing a low-rise midi skirt and matching cardigan, accentuating her Y2K aesthetic. Her eyes were heavily lined in black eyeliner and her glossy lips lined with brown pencil, further committing to the punk rock vibes.

Though not for everyone, Hadid pulls off the chunky highlights with ease. The trick? Creating that stark contrast, Kristen Fleming, color director at Chicago’s 3rd Coast Salon, told us previously. Here, Hadid achieves that with what appears to be an intentionally brassy orange hue. “A bold and chunky face frame is great for anyone who wants something fun and edgier,” Fleming added.
This isn’t the only bold face frame Hadid has been spotted with lately. In January, she was photographed with a similar, though slightly more dramatic, hairstyle: two-toned fired red hair. And just earlier this week, she was seen on set of a photoshoot with a more, um, polarizing take: a sharp black bob with blonde baby bangs and blonde-dipped tips.
Of course, this look was likely a wig, given her quick transformation back to long, dark hair. But regardless, Bella Hadid is really making a case for chunky, two-toned highlights. Feeling it?
