Chrissy Teigen Reflects On Her First Sober Vacation

Chrissy Teigen is proving that you don’t need alcohol to have a good time. After taking some time away from social media following her Twitter bullying scandal, the 35-year-old model, host, and cookbook author shared an update with fans about her sobriety journey. Teigen and her husband, John Legend, recently returned from Capri, Italy, where they attended the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund gala — a trip that, for Teigen, was free of alcohol.

Along with a few shots of her looking glammed-up in a feather-laden ensemble, Teigen wrote a lengthy IG caption sharing that she and Legend hadn’t taken a vacation together in awhile, and that it made them “feel young again.” She then noted that the trip was her first sober getaway, adding that it was a mind-expanding experiencing. “Thanks for making me feel so pretty and helping me along in my quest to have my first sober Italian getaway,” Teigen said, referring to her team.

She continued: “I hate the word sober by the way, it’s so rehab/medical. Anyhow honestly it was so so trippy being sober at something you typically would have been wasted at. that paired with all the crazy hot young models and club dudes and seeing your young self over and over, oh man it was crazy. anyhow I dunno. I’m rambling. we had so much fun. I didn’t do anything I’d regret and I’m glad I’ll get to remember it all!!”

In 2017, Teigen said she was trying to cut back on alcohol in an interview with Cosmopolitan. “I was, point blank, just drinking too much,” she said. “I got used to being in hair and makeup and having a glass of wine. Then that glass of wine would carry over into me having one before the awards show. And then a bunch at the awards show. And then I felt bad for making kind of an ass of myself to people that I really respected,” she said. “And that feeling, there’s just nothing like that. You feel horrible. It’s not a good look for me, for John, for anybody.”

Teigen eventually let fans know that she had gone completely sober in December 2020, when she celebrated one month of sobriety via her Instagram Stories (via ET). “One month ago, on my birthday, I got this book from my doctor and friend,” Teigen wrote, along with a photo of Holly Whitaker’s book, Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol. “I was done with making an a** out of myself in front of people (I’m still embarrassed), tired of day drinking and feeling like s**t by six, not being able to sleep. I have been sober ever since.”
