8 Fashion Trends That’ll Make You Excited To Shop This Spring

Despite the fact that we’re still not out of the woods, many of us are looking forward to brighter days—i.e. when COVID cases hopefully start plummeting and the weather will get a little warmer. Should both of these wishes come true, it means it’s time to stash the leggings and joggers away for another day and invest in some on-trend pieces that you can wear this spring.

Starting as early as February, spring fashion brings with it a sense of optimism for the new year ahead, explains fashion designer, Nancy Volpe Beringer. “Coming out of the winter months, excess layers are shed and replaced with softer silhouettes,” she says. “Spring fashion also expands our use of the color wheel. As the optimistic mood of the season brings in a new energy, we tend transition towards more saturated colors and away from darker shadess.”

There are so many features that make spring fashion unique, but for Monisha Kapur, virtual personal stylist and founder of 344pm, it’s all about the basic offerings, like button-down shirts and denim with sprinkled-in elements that help set the tone for the seasons ahead—i.e. new fabrications like vegan leather, updated silhouettes like knit maxi skirts, and bold upbeat colors.

Ready to savor the styles that are set to be on trend this season? Here are the top to spring 2022 fashion trends to shop now, according to fashion stylists.

Wide Leg Pants

The 90s grunge trend is gaining some serious momentum this spring but with a more sophisticated take. “As work life and home life change, there is a desire for more relaxed and easy pieces,” says Kapur. “To maintain a polished look, pair wide leg pants with a tailored or fitted top, blazer, and heels.”

Bright, Bold Prints

In addition to a myriad of colorful hues, Kapur believes geometric and psychedelic prints are exactly what we need to lighten the mood and bring some joy back into dressing. “Designers answered the call with an array of fabulous prints for spring,” she says. “Go all in with a bold geometric print jumpsuit or maxi dress paired with solid pumps and minimalist accessories.”

Sexy Cutouts

Good news for anyone who’s ready to bring sexy back in 2022: Cutouts are here to stay. “There are so many spins on ‘the new sexy’ trend, but one thing is for sure and it’s that people are ready to show some skin,” says Lana Blanc, stylist and personal shopper. The chicest way to do this is with strategically placed cutouts at the waistline, on the hips, and down the back of garments.

Onesies

Babies aren’t the only ones who are going to be wearing onesies this spring. In fact, Ali Levine, celebrity stylist and founder of the podcast Everything With Ali Levine, says to get ready for full, figure-hugging bodysuits to be one of the biggest spring 2022 fashion trends. She recommends sporting a second-skin onesie on its own to a workout class or layering it with an oversized blazer for more of a ready-to-wear look.

Feather Details

“Bottega Veneta gave luxurious feathers a glorious comeback between his pants, heels, and designer bags,” says Beringer. “Unless you’re going to fully commit to feathers with something like the Bottega Veneta Soft Denim Feather Pants, it’s often best to opt for softer touches, whether they’re lining the trim of your top, adorned on the front or back of your heels or as a detail on your handbag.”

Cropped Cardigans

Cardigans have always been a transitional staple, but this season it’s all about the cropped cardigan, says Kapur. “This year’s cardigans take on a whole new role,” she says. “From cropped to ribbed to scalloped edges, the cardigan is not only a great layering piece, but it also stands alone.” She recommends pairing a fitted, cropped cardigan with wide leg pants and heels for a cool night-out outfit.

Color Blocking

One prominent trend from the 2022 spring and summer runway shows is color blocking. Though we’ve seen this before, the new take is more of a DIY approach in which you mix and match contrasting colors to create an eye-catching combination, says fashion stylist Lisa Stapleton. For example, pair bright pants with a contrasting blazer and complementing sheer shirt, she says. Finish the look with a neutral high heel to balance the outfit. “As an abstract form of art, color blocking is a great way to accentuate body shapes,” she adds.

Mini Skirts

Big in the 1960s and again in the early 2000s, the leggy silhouette made a triumphant return on the spring 2022 runways. From mini to super-mini hemlines, denim to leather materials, and neutral to bold colors, you have plenty of options to play with in your wardrobe. Mini skirts are a great way to show some skin and embrace your figure in a fun way, says Stapleton. For more of a mature take, she suggests pairing a high-waisted mini skirt with tall boots; for something more casual, opt for moto boots.

Consignment Shopping

If there was ever a time to emphasize the importance of sustainable shopping, it’s now while we’re in the midst of a pandemic and climate crises. The amount of clothing Americans throw away is staggering, with studies showing that 84 percent of clothing ends up in landfills or incinerators. The good news: Resale is the fastest growing trend in the industry.

“By making a small conscious effort to buy from zero-waste brands and consignment shops, we can make a major difference for the planet,” says Beringer. Her own company, The Vault by Volpe Beringer, is an online luxury resale store that features secondhand, sustainable, and inclusive pieces.

Of course, price is another appealing factor of consignment shopping. You can find everything from vintage pieces to designer bags and shoes at a fraction of the original cost. Some popular online consignment stores include ThredUp, PoshMart, The Real Real, and Rebag,
