Teacher burnout levels have reached an alarming percentage. Recent data has found that around 60% of teachers in K-12 are impacted by job-related stress. This statistic not only hurts the teachers, but can also spread to the students and the broader school community. Teachers often work an average of 53 hours per week, but nearly a third of the time is unpaid. What’s even worse? Only about 36% of teachers consider their base pay adequate for living. Between juggling student behavior, low pay, and administrative tasks, teachers often are left overwhelmed and exhausted.

The consequences of teacher burnout stretch far beyond just the teacher who is experiencing it. It can also affect student attitudes and success, and the overall school culture. Educators often prioritize everything else over their well-being, leaving them drained and disenheartened. That’s why it’s so important to create a culture that fosters healthier, happier, and more productive communities from the teachers all the way to the students.

Below are seven strategies for schools to combat teacher burnout:

  • Improve Work-Life Balance: Reassess teachers’ tasks and prioritize essential versus non-essential. Remove the non-essential and protect mental health by offering personal days and employee assistance programs (EAPs).
  • Health-Related Education and Activities: Offer workshops, yoga, or mindfulness breaks to allow teachers to reset and have time for movement, which can improve focus and mood.
  • Environmental Adjustments: Add healthy snacks to staff areas or other decorations to promote healthier habits and a safe space for teachers to congregate.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Create a positive work environment where even small achievements are noticed. The includes birthdays, work anniversaries, and life milestones.
  • Engage with Self-Care Initiatives: Distribute self-care strategies to staff to encourage them to participate in wellness activities.
  • Local Wellness Partnerships: Create a partnership with a local gym or wellness center to provide discounted memberships and other resources for teachers, including group workout sessions or classes.
  • Host Wellness Forums: Create forums for teachers to share ideas and lifestyle tips with co-workers, and offer on-site classes in breathwork and meditation to foster a supportive atmosphere.

Even with new challenges and staffing shortages, there has been a slight decline in teachers’ desire to leave the profession, signaling a shift in mindset due to these new supportive strategies. However, there are still issues, with female teachers reporting higher stress levels and African American educators showing different patterns in job-related stress and turnover intentions. This is exactly why these wellness strategies are so important to lessen teacher burnout and keep educators happy in mind and body.
