Demi Lovato has come out as non-binary and is changing their pronouns to they/them. On Wednesday, in a series of Tweets, the “Dancing With the Devil” singer announced they were making the change after “a lot of self-reflective work.”
“Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between,” they wrote.
“Not only has my life been a journey for myself, I was also living for those on the other side of the cameras,” the tweet continued. “Today is a day I’m so happy to share more of my life with you all- I am proud to let you know that I identify as non-binary & will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward.”
Lovato went on to explain that the change comes after a lot of healing and self-reflective work. “I’m still learning & coming into myself, & I don’t claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me,” they wrote.
Lovato also opened up about the decision in their new podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato. “Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary,” the popstar said in the introduction of latest episode with guest Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender non-conforming writer and performer.
“With that said, I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering.”
Lovato has always been an open book, sharing their personal struggles with mental health, body image issues, eating disorders, and addiction with fans. In 2018, they suffered a near-fatal overdose, during which they were told they had only five to 10 more minutes to live.
“I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists or team members or this or that, or even fans that wanted me to be the sexy, feminine pop star in the … leotard and look a certain way, you know?” they said in a Youtube Docuseries released earlier this year.
Following their highly-publicized engagement to and split from Max Ehrich, Lovato came out as queer. In March, they told Glamour that they feel “too queer” to date a cis man right now. “I thought I was going to spend my life with someone. Now that I wasn’t going to, I felt this sense of relief that I could live my truth,” they said of the engagement. “I know who I am and what I am, but I’m just waiting for a specific timeline to come out to the world as what I am.”
Lovato hopes that by coming out, they will inspire others to identify as their authentic self. “I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones. Please keep living in your truths & know I am sending so much love your way,” they said of their decision to come out as non-binary.
