Lizzo hit a huge milestone in her health journey. She’s hit her target weight. I
n a post on Instagram, the singer wrote, “I did it. Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal. I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!”
The second photo in the post is incredibly important, as it shows some of her weight loss stats. This includes Lizzo losing 10.5 points in her BMI and 16% of her body fat.
Here is everything Lizzo has shared during her “weight release” journey.
Starting Her “Weight Release” in 2023
Lizzo shared on an appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty that her “intentional weight release journey” took around a year and a half to complete. While she always loved working out, this decision elevated her workouts and dedication to shedding some weight.
“I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin,” she explained in the interview. “I don’t ever want to be thin. Will my body fluctuate from this size? Will I get a little smaller … or a little bigger, depending on … the choices I make…? Yes, I’m used to fluctuating.”
Tried Ozempic
When Lizzo started sharing posts about her weight loss progress, the rumors about her using Ozempic started flying. However, she took it all in stride, posting a clip of her smiling to the soundtrack of “It’s like a reward.” The caption? “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit.”
Later, Lizzo admitted she briefly used the drug. However, for her, the medicine came down to “calories in vs. calories out.” Since she was able to do that on her own without the help of medication, she stopped taking Ozempic.
Lost Weight “Very Slowly”
Lizzo wasn’t looking to drop a lot of weight fast for a quick fix. Instead, she told The New York Times she had “been methodical” and was “losing weight very slowly.”
“My body has been changing very slowly, but I don’t think people were paying attention,” she told Shetty in their interview. “Everybody’s not privy to what you’re going through. They’re not with you every day. So when I pop out on a red carpet or when a video suddenly goes viral and my body is different, it appears like it was overnight. It appears sudden.”
In reality, most successful weight loss programs take time and dedication.
Dealing with Ups and Downs
Along with jumping numbers on the scale, Lizzo was dealing with the ups and downs of weight loss mentally, too. “I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day,” the singer told NYT.
“The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day. There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive.”
Instead of beating herself up, she’s changed her idea of body positivity into “body neutrality.”
Combining Workout Strategies
Lizzo has embraced several workout strategies on her way to her health goals. She did a lot of weight training, pilates, strength training, long walks, and jumping rope. The singer enjoys switching up her workouts and tries to move her body in some capacity every single day.
“I’m taking the time every day to put some love into my body,” she told the NYT. “There is never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”
Reached Goal in January 2025
While everyone is focused on starting and sticking to their New Year’s resolutions, Lizzo finally reached hers in January 2025.
Posting an Instagram photo of the achievement, Lizzo showed off her goal body and other weight loss stats in the image. Now she is ready for “new goals.”
Doesn’t Use the Term “Weight Loss”
Throughout her weight loss journey, Lizzo has been open about her interesting way of approaching losing weight. Instead of calling it a “weight loss,” she adopted the term “weight release” as a more holistic way to describe her life changes that have affected her body shape and health.
Lizzo is also very conscious about how she talks about her body, especially to discourage negativity in her younger fans.
“Even me releasing the weight has affected people and I take that seriously,” Lizzo expressed. “And because of that I want to transmute it into something that makes people feel comfortable and less afraid of it.”
Prioritizing Herself
Lizzo has always been about self-love, and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down with her weight goal reached. She believes in her body and her confidence, pushing away the haters and rumors with funny social media posts and a smile.
We cannot wait to see which goal she reaches next.
